In a modern day David and Goliath battle, Wausau Truck Center took on Volvo Trucks N.A. (VTNA) and fought to retain its Volvo sales and service agreement in the relatively small North Central Wisconsin market of Wausau. VTNA is part of the Volvo Group, one of the world’s largest producers of trucks, buses and construction equipment. VTNA had sought to terminate the dealer’s franchise on a variety of issues, ending at the Wisconsin Division of Hearings and Appeals.
In May 2003, VTNA began termination actions against Wausau Truck Center, a dealer for Volvo Trucks since 1988. After a lengthy legal battle between the dealer and the manufacturer, the administrator for the Wisconsin Division of Hearings and Appeals has ruled in favor of Wausau Truck Center, allowing the dealership to retain its Volvo Truck franchise. “We are extremely pleased with the outcome,” said Sam Stevenson, General Manager of the dealership, "And we look forward to supporting our friends and customers in Central Wisconsin for many years to come”.
Eric Jorgensen, dealer principal of Wausau Truck Center, reported the dealership has 35 full time employees with annual sales of approximately $22 million. The dealership has been at its present location in Wausau, a city of about 40,000 people, since the late 1960's. “Servicing customers is the foundation our business is built on” said Jorgensen, “and we felt this fight was necessary to protect the relationships we‘ve built with our customers.”
